The Goodwood Revival is an annual three day event held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex. Over one of the last weekends of the summer crowds gather to both celebrate and be entertained by the cars, bikes, and aeroplanes of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
Over the years since the first Revival in 1998 more and more visitors have entered into the spirit of the event by dressing in the style of the period. By doing so they have created a unique event in which the romance, glamour, and excitement of the period are brought to life. Walking around the Goodwood Revival is often like being on a large and busy film set. Here you might see men and women dressed in the Forces uniforms of World War II performing the Jitter-Bug. Around another corner you might see an entire family in 1950s clothing enjoying a picnic on the grass, while elsewhere you’ll see hippie chicks from the 1960s, Mods and Rockers dancing, and a very convincing Marilyn Monroe lookalike entertaining the crowds!
The Goodwood Revival has something for everyone. There are the cars and bikes from several classes in each of three decades. Races are held throughout each of the three days of the event and at least once a day there is a thrilling air display by vintage aircraft from the Second World War, several of which are original aeroplanes lovingly restored over many years of painstaking work. In addition visitors can walk around the static aircraft display and the racing paddocks for a closer inspection of cars and ‘planes.
If the smell of petrol or aviation fuel doesn’t do it for you there are jazz and rock & roll bands, a fun fair, and a market, not to mention numerous places to eat and drink. You can simply stroll about and enjoy the spectacle of elegantly dressed men and women bringing the period back to life. The Goodwood Revival is the perfect place for you to don your favourite outfit from your collection of 1950s clothing and you'll look right at home, dressed for the occasion.
Between 1948 and 1966 Goodwood was one the most important race tracks in the country and many spectacular races were held there. The motor circuit is built upon the perimeter track of Goodwood Airfield which was an important World War II fighter base (formerly known as Westhampnett) and it was from the grass runways here that Sir Douglas Bader took off in his Spitfire on his final mission before being shot down and captured. A life-size statue of the fighter ace now stands watching over the airfield near the small memorial garden.
