'Scarborough', LNER poster, 1923-1947.
Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), showing holiday-makers on the promenade and beach at Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The old North Sea fishing port and spa town of Scarborough, which included the remains of a 12th century castle, and a Roman signal station on Castle Cliff between North Bay and South Bay, was built on a steep cliff side and became a popular seaside holiday resort. Poster produced for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Perthshire, Scotland. The poster shows a view of the Gleneagles Hotel seen across the famous golf course. The Gleneagles Hotel was built with its own railway station by the Caledonian Railway Company, and when it opened in 1924, it was described as 'a Riviera in the Highlands'. It became a fashionable high society holiday destination. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971), who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR).
